Today is 08-08-2008, which is also 08 July in the Chinese calendar. For traditional Chinese people, wedding ceremony would not be held during this month because of July (in Chinese calendar) is the ghost festival (month). However, it is a lot different in 2008. Lots of couple rush to have their wedding ceremony held on 8 August 2008. One of the reason is that the Olympic games are held in Beijing and the opening ceremony will be in 8 August 2008.

Another reason is that the word “EIGHT” reads like another word which means “rich and wealthy” in Chinese. The date 08-08-2008 means very rich and wealthy. It is a really lucky date! Therefore, lots of Chinese people will choose to have their wedding ceremony on 8 Aug 2008.

Interestingly, it seems that all couples have just forgot it is the ghost month!

Two days ago, a couple in China just had their hot air balloon wedding. Yes, they were having their wedding on a hot air balloon. The exchanged their vows at a height of 114 m, which is about 377 feet. According to the groom, he only told the bride about this idea 3 days before the big day!

The bride was quite surprised when she heard that since the groom said that they will be the only people who were on the balloon. But the truth is that the groom had been trained for some time to control the hot balloon! “I was a bit nervous when we started. However, I found that I had nothing to fear when I was with him” according to the bride.

I think it is really quite romantic to have such a hot air balloon wedding. If you are also thinking of one, remember to learn to control the balloon first. Of course you also need to ask your insurance company about the issue of a “Hot air balloon wedding” insurance!

A special Wedding

I read a piece of news a few days ago on a special wedding in Hong Kong. The wedding was taken place in a wet market, in front of a stall which sells poultry. The parents of the groom have been running the little stall for 40 years. They earn their living from this stall until the groom finished his Ph.D. degree.

The meaning is always the most important

Every couple would like to make their wedding as unique as possible. This wedding in front of a poultry stall is undoubtedly very unique and special. However, what I think is that such a wedding will become meaningless without the story behind. In this wedding the ceremony is certainly very meaningful since it tells the story of the groom.

Everyone of us will have a different story. Our weddings will automatically become special if there is a meaning behind. After 50 years, maybe all your guests have forgotten what had happened on your big day. But the meaning and memories will still be with you. And that’s why meaning is always more important.

Chinese sedan chair

Traditionally, the bride had to leave her home and go to the groom’s home on the wedding day in China. The bride would sit on the sedan chair and the groom and his relatives would bring the bride back to the groom’s home.

A modern version of sedan chair

Nowadays, we seldom use the sedan chair in weddings since the distance between the homes of the couple can be quite something. A vehicle will be needed in most cases. However, some bride may still want to try to sit on the chair and there is a modern version of the sedan chair. The sedan chair can be assembled and disassembled so that it can be brought into the lifts. Besides, there are a few wheels under the chair so that it can be moved easily.

You may also want to try the sedan chair, right? However, you may need to go to Hong Kong or other places in China to try it. Or you may consider planning your destination wedding in Hong Kong, which should be a romantic and memorable wedding.

A Red Colored Gown

Traditionally, Chinese wedding dresses are in red color. With the patterns of dragon and pheonix on it. Personally I think it can be somehow more sophisticated than a traditaional western wedding gown.

The Most Expensive Chinese wedding Gown

Most people have an impression that the most expensive Chinese wedding dress is not red in color. In fact, it is still red basically. However, the patterns are made with gold and silver strings and this will nearly cover the whole dress. And this makes the gown look like a gold and silver one.

If you are interested, you may also try to wear a Chinese wedding gown on your big day. It can certainly impress your guests a lot.

Hong Kong Weddings

In Hong Kong, it is very interesting that people will adopt both “Chinese wedding” and “Western Wedding”. In fact, I will define the wedding in Hong Kong as “Hong Kong wedding” rather than a Chinese or a Western one. This is because couples in Hong Kong nowadays have combine both traditions for their weddings.

Chinese Wedding Traditions

Couples in Hong Kong will normally follow the Chinese traditions in the morning of the wedding day. Of course they may not strictly follow all the rituals. However, they will still have the Tea Ceremony and worship the ancestors. Then they may have a more “western” ceremony to exchange vows.

When East Meets West

Sometimes the Chinese and Western traditions will be combined. Taking the wedding reception as an example. Most couples will follow the Western tradition of cake cutting. Interestingly, the cake is usually a fake which will be used for different couples. On the other hand, guests will follows the Chinese tradition to give the couples money instead of wedding gifts.

Of course some couples will prefer a simpler approach such as holding a small gathering with friends and relatives after exchanging vows. However, due to the pressures from the parents. Some of these couples will still take this “Chinese-Western” approach.

Discount for Bulk Order

There are sometimes clients asking me that if there is discount when the quantity of order for the invitation is larger. In fact, this is a common misconception for clients in Hong Kong. This is mainly due to the practices of other wedding invitation vendors. They will tell the clients there will be discounts when they order more. And indeed the discounts they refer to is a lower unit price.

A Simple Law of Economics

In fact we should not treat the lower unit price a discount. As a matter of fact, it is only a simple law of economics. The cost of a business is the total cost of fixed cost and variable cost. When we are printing the wedding cards, there is a fixed cost for printing, and the variable cost is the material (most probably paper). As a result the unit price will be lower when a larger quantity is ordered.

I hope this can help couples to understand more about wedding invitation production!

About this wedding

On 28 August 2007 there was a couple in KunMing, China who had their wedding in the air. They had their wedding in the air and also exchanged the wedding bands in the air. The reason for this special air wedding is that both Tie Guangju and Jiang Dezhang (the bride and the groom) are working as high-rise building cleaners for the same company.

Planning for your own unique wedding

The wedding is certainly very interesting. I think it is really romantic and perfect for the couple. Their wedding is tied to their lives (in this case the couple tied their wedding to their careers). Not many couples are able to connect their weddings to their lives.

All of us are thinking of and want to plan for a unique and special wedding. In fact the most unique wedding is a wedding really about you. It should be able say something about you and your partner. If you have any idea to connect your wedding to your lives, you should go ahead and forget all the etiquette and traditions. In this way I am sure that you can create a unique and special wedding of your own.

The Hungry Ghost Festival

Yesterday was the “Hungry Ghost Festival” (14 July) in the Chinese Calendar. Traditionally no one will get married in July (in the Chinese Calendar) because the gate between the hell and our world will open in this month. Getting married in this month will only render bad luck or unhappy marriage.

All about taboos

Some brides-to-be even tell me that they will not do anything related to their wedding this month. They will not even order any wedding item this month.

Although it is a bit superstitious to follow all these traditions, I think it is interesting that there are so many taboos related to wedding. And if time allows, it does no harm to follow these traditions. You may also follow them to make sure that nothing will be going wrong.

A wedding card with the portrait of the couple

Today I found an interesting wedding card on the web. It is a wedding card with the couple’s portrait on it. The portrait is in the style of a cartoon drawing.

In fact it is quite common to use a cartoon drawing to make a wedding card nowadays. What is interesting about this card is that it is very Chinese.

A “mix and match” approach of design

As a designer myself, I find this kind of “mix and match” design quite interesting. It is very Chinese because the main color theme is red. And on the other hand it is very modern, with the cartoon drawing on it.

When you are designing your wedding invitation, you can also take this approach to make a collage of different styles and elements.
